Each theater has significant performances that become touchstones for the future generations as regards artistic aspirations and preferences. The play “Tevye-Tevel” based on the works by Sholem Aleichem, the play by Grigori Gorin, has been such a performance for Ivan Franko Theater for many years.
More than twenty years ago, a young director Dmytro Chyrypyuk brought the play by Grigori Gorin and music by Mikhail Gluz for the play “Memorial Prayer” from his probation period at Moscow Lenkom Theater. This is how his collaborative work with the artistic managing director Sergiy Danchenko on the production began. There is an interesting little known fact that the current performer of a role of Tevye – Bohdan Beniuk – was then assigned the role of Tevye alongside Bohdan Stupka. But at that time, the actor was closer to the part of Motl the Tailor, and he had successfully played this role for several years in a row.
At the beginning of the 100th anniversary season, experienced artists, including the director Dmytro Chyrypyuk and the performer of a role of Tevye Bohdan Beniuk decided to present an updated version of the play “Tevye-Tevel”, in which the artists of Ivan Franko Theater of different generations (both those who played in the previous version of the performance and those who will deal with this work for the first time) will get together.
