Success at the International Theater Festival in Romania
The International Theater Festival in Romania finished. Artists from 82 countries around the world participated in this event. Among the participants was the team from Ivan Franko National Academic Drama Theater that presented their play “Caligula” directed by Ivan Uryvskyi.
“Cultural integration is extremely important in today's reality,” said Vitalii Azhnov, an actor from Ivan Franko National Academic Drama Theater. “Each participation in festivals of this level is another way to talk about Ukraine and, in particular, about our theater as one in the scope of the best theaters in the world.”
“The play 'Caligula' today is a kind of indicator and an important message to the world without any speculation,” he added. “It is valuable that we were heard. Both of our performances were sold out and received standing ovations!”
The performance by actors from Franko Theater, including Vitalii Azhnov, Oleksandr Rudynskyi, Tetiana Mikhina, Olena Khokhlatkina, Renat Settarov, and Akmal Gurezov, caused immense delight among festival visitors. After the performance, fans from all over Europe approached them to express their admiration.
Yevhen Nyshchuk, general director-artistic director of Ivan Franko National Academic Drama Theater, noted that tours by the country's leading theaters are an important part of cultural policy. “Participation in such iconic festivals is important for us because through the language of art, the language of theater, people learn more about Ukraine,” he stated. “In a certain way, we are the voice of Ukraine, conveying the truth through live communication. In addition, by demonstrating classical works in the contemporary interpretation of our theater, we also demonstrate the meanings and visions from which Ukrainian identity has been formed.”
Nyshchuk also mentioned that very soon, “Caligula” will be able to be appreciated by visitors to the Avignon Festival - the largest theater festival in the world - where the theater team will perform the play this July.
It is worth noting that the International Theater Festival in Sibiu (Romania) is considered one of the most prestigious theater festivals in the world and is inferior only to Avignon (France) and Edinburgh (Scotland).
