For me, the main theme of the play is the choice between two forces - Light and Darkness. The plot contains a love story and a feeling of an imminent war, because one of the leitmotifs of the work is that Zabryokha constantly receives letters of orders to march with his centurion to defend the state. And there are many different sub-themes that are consonant with our problems: the theme of power, which accidentally falls into the hands of the wrong person... The author has embedded a lot of political, life, spiritual meanings in this play. It is a kind of fairy tale with a terrible ending. The characters renounce Faith and rely on dark forces. And a person without Faith ceases to be a Man, turning into a pawn who is unable to either change his own life or oppose what is happening around him. And in a very interesting and deep way, H. Kvitka- Osnovianenko revealed the topic of cataclysms occurring in nature - the drought "the witches stole the rain and dew". This is also a certain metaphor, which, in my opinion, is associated with today's global natural phenomena: such as earthquakes, floods, tsunamis that occur in different parts of the globe. Perhaps this is also the impact of the loss of Faith and the beginning of the death of the planet, and humanity should think about what is happening to all of us?
