The plot and the course of events that happened to the main character Nykodym Dyzma is unreal and surreal to a certain extent. An average person from a small town moves from the periphery to the capital in search of a better life. He has neither education nor specialty, and the only thing he wants is to find a cushy job to live calmly and prosperously, if possible, with little effort. They say fools for luck, or God fell asleep on the job... But one day, accidentally (or not accidentally), he gets a letter of invitation to a social event arranged by the Chairman of the Council of Ministers. Of course, it wasn't his invitation, but why not take the opportunity and at least eat something delicious? Without hesitation, Nykodym crosses the cherished line of the powers that be. And then... Chance does its job. He finds himself in the vortex of a refined society, which he couldn't even dream of. In addition, the environment begins to “play” the king. An anecdotal case turns Dyzma into a “hero”. Everyone is certain that he is the person who is able to save the country from the crisis, who, unlike many clerks, ministers and others, has vast knowledge and a brilliant life-giving mind. The frantic career of a mediocre man, imbued with farcical elements, begins.
